KOZHIKODE: In a significant development, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has exposed a massive tax evasion amounting to 27 crores in the bustling commercial hub of Mittai Theruvu in Kozhikode. The investigation primarily targeted around 20 textile shops owned by Ashraf Ali, a local resident, as well as Ashraf Ali’s wife and friend, Shabir. Subsequently, officials seized incriminating documents related to the tax evasion from their residences.

Yesterday, during the inspection conducted by the GST department officials, they encountered resistance from the employees of Ladies World, a textile shop owned by Ashraf Ali, who locked them inside the shop. This incident further highlighted the seriousness of the situation.

Furthermore, the authorities have uncovered numerous counterfeit documents in the area, which were being utilized for GST fraud. In response, the GST department plans to take appropriate measures, including the cancellation of GST registration for the implicated businesses. Additionally, notices will be issued to the owners, demanding the payment of the outstanding 27 crore rupees in taxes.

This discovery serves as a significant step towards combating tax evasion and ensuring compliance with GST regulations in the region. The GST department remains committed to taking further actions to rectify the situation and uphold the integrity of the tax system.
