Thiruvananthapuram: General Secretary of SNDP Yogam, Vellapally Natesan, said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) must be implemented in the country. He outlined his support for the UCC in the editorial of SNDP’s publication Yoganadam.

Vellapally Natesan said that if UCC is implemented in the country it will make the legal system more efficient and added that those who oppose the UCC have other aims.

When the UCC is implemented, there will be an end to lakhs of cases, which are based on personal laws,  pending before the courts. There will also be an end to the long wait of people for justice in the cases related to the complicated personal laws.

Natesan in his editorial also said that UCC will benefit women the most. Currently, women fall victim to personal laws. He also pointed out that the UCC is mostly opposed by some sections in the Muslim community.

He reminded that Dr. BR Ambedkar had to surrender to pressure and had to withdraw his demand to implement the UCC.

The SNDP General Secretary also cited the example of Adv. C Shukoor and his wife Dr. Sheena, who was the former Pro Vice Chancellor of MG University. The couple had married 29 years ago and has three daughters. But they remarried recently under the Special Marriage Act so that their three daughters will be the sole inheritors of the couple’s all assets.

Vellapally Natesan’s support to UCC is a big blow to the CPI(M) leadership in the state. He is seen close to the communist party and was seen supporting the party during the ‘Women’s Wall’, a human chain formed on January 1, 2019 for gender equality and protest against gender discrimination. The CPI(M) conducted the Women’s Wall in response to the massive protest against women entry into Sabarimala.

The SNDP Yogam is a social service organization that has been representing the Ezhava community in Kerala since 1903. It was begun with the blessings of the Hindu spiritual leader and reformer Sree Narayana Guru. Incidentally, the political wing of the SNDP Yogam, Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) is in the NDA front and is headed by Vellapally’s son Thushar Vellapally.
