Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has once again delivered a shock to the Malayali populace as it announces an increase in the electricity surcharge to Rs. 19 paisa per unit in the month of August. This represents a 10 percent increase from the surcharge levied in July, leaving consumers with an additional burden on their electricity bills.
In July, the electricity surcharge stood at Rs. 18 paisa per unit. The current increase is attributed to two factors that, the electricity board’s decision to raise the surcharge by one paisa and the nine-paisa surcharge already fixed by the Regulatory Commission. When combined, these factors contribute to the total surcharge of Rs. 19 paisa per unit.
The imposition of the surcharge is a measure taken by the Electricity Board to offset the rising costs of generating electricity. In June, KSEB imposed Rs. 10-paisa surcharge with the aim of recovering overspend of Rs 33.92 crore. The current nine-paisa surcharge approved by the Regulatory Commission is expected to remain in effect until October.
