Chennai: The Home Minister of India, Amit Shah, is set to inaugurate a six-month-long state-wide padayatra (foot march) led by K. Annamalai, the President of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. The ceremony will take place in the temple town of Rameswaram on Friday evening, and the padayatra will begin on Saturday morning. Named ‘En Mann, En Makkal’ (My land, My people), the padayatra aims to cover all 234 Assembly constituencies in the state, and the BJP is optimistic that it will have a significant impact on the party’s prospects in Tamil Nadu.
Since K. Annamalai, a former IPS officer who transitioned into politics, assumed the role of BJP state president, he has been aggressively targeting the ruling DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and has exposed various corruption cases involving the DMK’s senior leaders, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his tenure as Deputy Chief Minister in the previous government.
The padayatra will span across all 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu and is scheduled to conclude on January 11, 2024, just ahead of the 2024 general elections. Covering a distance of 1,770 km on foot and using a vehicle to traverse rural areas, K. Annamalai will lead the campaign. The padayatra will include ten major rallies, with each rally addressed by a central minister, including senior national leaders.
To engage with the public and sway them from the influence of the DMK towards the BJP, one lakh copies of the book titled ‘What Did Modi Do’ will be distributed to the people, as stated by the BJP state chief. The saffron party is hopeful that this initiative will help establish a stronger connection with the people of Tamil Nadu and bolster their support for the BJP, as conveyed by party state vice president Karu Nagarajan.
