Kalpetta: A farmer committed suicide at Wayanad owing to crop failure and non repayment of bank loan. The deceased, T. V. Krishnakumar, was found hanging at his residence in Annapara. The Thirunelli police conducted the inquest and the body taken for post mortem.
Krishnakumar lived with his family in the forest before moving to Annapara 10 years back. After moving to Annapara he bought two and a half acres of land for cultivation and a house. He took loan from several banks to the tune of Rs. 8 lakhs for the purchase.
After his crops failed he could not payback his dues he owed the banks and was suffering from severe depression for days before taking his own life.
Farmer suicides have been plaguing many regions of Kerala including Wayanad. Around five farmers committed suicide in Idukki district alone since January.
Wayanad constituency hit the news in recent weeks when it was reported that Rahul Gandhi is planning to contest from there. Wayanad is considered a safe seat for Congress party which won by a considerable majority during 2014 elections.
