As of today, August 4, Chandrayaan-3 launched on July 14, has successfully traversed approximately two-thirds of the distance to the moon. On August 1, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) executed the TransLunar Injection (TLI) maneuver, propelling Chandrayaan-3 in the direction of the moon. ISRO redirected the spacecraft, which had been orbiting Earth, onto its trajectory towards the moon.

After the successful TransLunar Injection (TLI), ISRO has reported that the health of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is normal and it has entered the moon’s sphere of influence.

The next milestone is the Lunar Orbit Injection (LOI), scheduled for around 7 p.m. IST on August 5. During this operation, the spacecraft is anticipated to enter into a lunar orbit. The LOI procedure will be executed from the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru.

Subsequently, there will be four orbital maneuvers to guide the spacecraft into its ultimate orbit, positioning it approximately 100 km away from the moon’s surface. Comprising a lander module (LM), a propulsion module (PM), and a rover, Chandrayaan-3 is poised for its next stage. The lander is projected to touch down on the moon’s surface on August 23 at 5.47 p.m. IST.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is on the brink of a notable milestone in space exploration as it crosses into the Moon’s sphere of influence on August 5. This pivotal juncture underscores the mission’s primary objective of executing a secure and gentle lunar landing, followed by moon rover operations. Chandrayaan-3 represents a foundational stride in ISRO’s forthcoming interplanetary endeavors, showcasing essential capabilities and forging a path for continued exploration of our neighboring celestial bodies.
