New Delhi: BJP’s Central Election Committee has announced Member of Parliament, Suresh Gopi, as the NDA candidate from Thrissur. With the entry of the Malayalam film star into the election fray, the contest at Thrissur is going to be pick up heat.

Thrissur seat was first given to BJP’s ally Bharat Dharma Jana Sena President Thushar Vellapally. However, when Rahul Gandhi announced his candidature at Wayanad, the BJP top leadership asked Thushar to take on the National President of the Congress party.

Suresh Gopi will be battling for the Thrissur Parliamentary seat against CPI(M)’s Rajaji Mathew Thomas and Congress’s T. N. Prathapan.

The NDA has a strong presence in the constituency. With Sabarimala issue still fresh in the minds of the Hindu community, Thrissur will witness a tough three-way election campaign.

Suresh Gopi who comes from the Malayalam movie fraternity has been in the limelight for more than three decades in the cultural life of Kerala. He had shot to stardom with his political thrillers and hard hitting dialogues. He is the winner of both National Film Award and Kerala State Film Award and has around 200 films in his kitty. He has recently become one of the most visible faces of the NDA.

The MP recently made news when he took the initiative to force the police to nab the culprits behind the kidnapping of a minor belonging to a migrant Rajasthani family. His intervention soon put the police on tenterhooks and within days the girl was found and brought back. The kidnapper was also arrested.

Suresh Gopi is active in philanthropic works and other social activism among the vulnerable communities in the state.
