Alappuzha: A joint inspection was conducted on houseboats in Alappuzha. The comprehensive inspection, undertaken by officials from the Port Department, Tourism Police, and Arthunkal Coastal Police, revealed concerning irregularities among some houseboat operators.
During the inspection, a troubling discovery emerged: seven houseboats were found to be operating without the requisite documentation. Furthermore, the diligent investigation exposed partial irregularities among the owners of 10 boats. These boat owners were promptly served notices to rectify their infractions, accompanied by a fine totaling Rs 1,20,000.
A total of 26 houseboats, three motorboats, and one barge boat came under scrutiny during the inspection, covering key points such as the finishing point, the starting point, and the Sai Boat House. The concerted effort aimed to safeguard the interests of tourists and maintain the credibility of Alappuzha’s bustling houseboat tourism industry.
The meticulous inspection also uncovered a silver lining, as the documents of 13 boats were found to be in proper order, reflecting the commitment of several operators to adhere to the regulatory framework and prioritise the safety and satisfaction of their patrons.
The inspection was conducted by a team of dedicated officials, including Port Checking Squad Officer P Shabu, Tourism Police Sub-Inspectors PR Rajesh and T Jayamohanan, and Senior Civil Police Officers C Sreeja and R Joshith. The Arthunkal Coastal Police were represented by Sub-Inspector Albert, and Coastal Warden Ranjith. The team stated that they would be conducting further inspections over the upcoming days also.
