Student attempts suicide over threats from SFI leaders for not participating in party programs: Says Principal did not take action even after complaining

Thiruvananthapuram: A first year degree student of the University College in the capital attempted suicide after she wrote a note blaming leaders of Student Federation of India (SFI) for forcing her to participate in party programs and for sharing social media posts critical of the communist party.

The student was found bleeding in her hostel room in the morning when cleaning staff came to her room. She was immediately rushed to the hospital where she is recuperating from the self inflicted wounds.

The student’s family had given a police complaint that the girl was missing since yesterday.

In the suicide note, she has said that the SFI leaders have threatened her many times. She was forced to participate in party marches and other programs. When she refused to join it, she was threatened by the leaders.

Besides, the leaders were angry at her for sharing social media posts that were critical against the SFI for stalling classes in the name of strikes thus cutting down the academic hours needed for the students.

What makes the incident more appalling is that the principal of the college refused to take action against the SFI leaders who were harassing her, even after she had complained about the matter to the authorities.

The police has initiated an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the principal has denied knowledge of the student’s complaint.

University College is considered as a strong hold of the SFI, the students wing of the CPI(M). It is also a haven of student activists of the communist party who take part in violent agitations and protests in the capital city.

The College is also notorious for not allowing other political organizations to take root. The freedom of expression and speech are not entertained inside the campus by the SFI. They use violence against anyone speaking against the SFI and the CPI(M).

Even the teaching faculty of the college are pro-left and support the anti democratic activities of SFI.
