Kottayam: Due to continuous heavy rains in several districts in Kerala, authorities in Kottayam and Alappuzha have taken precautionary steps, including declaring holidays for schools and opening relief camps.

The District Collector in Kottayam has declared a day off for schools and Anganwadis, especially in Kottayam taluk, Vaikom, and Changanassery taluks. The break is extended to higher secondary classes. In Alappuzha district, a similar break has been announced for schools in two taluks and those running relief camps.

The decision to close schools comes as a response to the heavy rains, leading to the opening of 17 relief camps in Kottayam. These camps, located across different taluks, are currently sheltering 239 people from 67 families affected by the bad weather. Although Kottayam didn’t get much rain last night, the district remains on green alert today.

To ensure safety, authorities in Kottayam have put a ban on mining activities until the 5th of this month. Nighttime travel restrictions to hilly areas have also been enforced.

Meanwhile, Alappuzha district has seen continuous rainfall for three days, causing waterlogging in many areas. Relief camps have been set up in Cherthala and Chengannur to help those affected.

The heavy rains across the state are due to extreme low pressure over the Middle-Eastern Arabian Sea, causing widespread rainfall. Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, has also experienced heavy rains since last night, affecting both hilly and urban areas.
