CHENNAI: Indian Railways has announced the introduction of a non-AC sleeper train, similar to the Vande Bharat. It has also been confirmed that the test-drive of the non-AC sleeper Vande Bharat will be conducted this month, with the final phase of the coach’s construction currently underway.

The Indian Railways has emphasised that the inaugural non-AC Vande Bharat train will offer affordable travel options while maintaining both speed and comfort. This train will feature enhanced interiors, passenger amenities, and upgraded couplers to ensure a smooth and jerk-free journey.

Vande SadharanOut of the 22 coaches, eight coaches of the train will be non-AC, and the maximum speed will be 130 kmph. Other features of the non-AC Vande Bharat will include a passenger information system, charging points near seats, and bio-vacuum toilets, among others. Additionally, multiple CCTV cameras will be installed in every coach of the train.

These non-AC variants also employ Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, designed to accommodate higher speeds. To facilitate increased speed, a specially manufactured locomotive will be connected to both ends of the train for a push-pull operation.

Officials from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) clarified that while some features of the Vande Bharat have been incorporated, it cannot be referred to as non-AC Vande Bharat. They also mentioned that this initiative aims to provide the Vande Bharat experience at a lower cost. Earlier, ICF mentioned ‘Vande Sadharan trains.

ICF Chennai officials have also stated that they are awaiting approval from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) for the commencement of commercial service.
