Thiruvananthapuram:  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rain in Central and South Kerala, leading to the declaration of a yellow alert in ten districts. The districts, which include Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram, have been issued a yellow alert.

The yellow alert remains in effect today for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki, with a continuation of the alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts tomorrow.

As heavy rainfall persists, Thiruvananthapuram city, along with hilly and coastal areas, is experiencing widespread rain. Over a span of three hours, Varkala recorded 48.5 mm of rainfall. The Central Water Commission has issued an orange alert for the Vallakkadavu station on the Thiruvananthapuram Karamana river, urging residents near the coast to exercise caution.

The intensification of rains is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over Tamil Nadu, accompanied by active Libra winds. The approaching Thulamas (12th month of the year) is expected to bring further heavy rains to the state in the coming days. The IMD also advised caution as light rain may occur in isolated places in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, and Malappuram in the coming hours.

Despite the weather conditions, the IMD assures that fishing activities along the coasts of Kerala and Karnataka can continue without disruption. However, those planning to fish on the Lakshadweep shores are advised against it due to the anticipated strong winds today and tomorrow. Additionally, strong winds are expected over the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining comorin region.
