Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram experienced severe waterlogging following a heavy downpour, resulting in widespread criticism of the Pinarayi government’s preparations. Many parts of the Thiruvananthapuram district found themselves submerged, particularly urban areas with substantial waterlogging issues. The primary cause behind this crisis has been the lack of drain maintenance and the accumulation of garbage. However, CPI(M) MP AA Rahim has presented an strange justification in his Facebook post, asserting that the central government bears responsibility for these circumstances. AA Rahim argues that the Modi government is significantly disregarding Kerala’s climate-related concerns.
In his his Facebook post, AA Rahim stated, “Kerala has been grappling with climate change for an extended period, and the central government, which should be proactive in issuing warnings and support, has failed in its duties. Thiruvananthapuram city alone received a staggering 25.2 mm of rainfall in a very short span of time, leading to the waterlogging. This occurred due to the Indian Meteorological Department’s failure to issue timely notifications about such extreme weather conditions.”
He went on to emphasize, “Despite numerous requests from the state, the central government has failed to establish a state-of-the-art weather forecasting system within Kerala. From essential services like rations to vital transportation networks like railways, the Modi government’s apparent disregard for Kerala is evident. Kerala currently lacks an efficient radar system for weather forecasting. The outdated radar in Kochi often malfunctions and doesn’t provide data in digital format for decision support systems. Kerala must unite against the central government’s apparent negligence.”
