Northeast monsoon will arrive in Kerala within three days

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning indicating that the monsoon season will arrive in the state of Kerala within the next three days. According to their forecasts, Thulavarsham, the northeast monsoon, is expected to reach South India shortly, with an initial phase of weak activity. (Thulavarsham denotes the period of rainfall during the Malayalam month of Thulam, spanning October to November.)

In light of this development, a five-day weather advisory has been issued for Kerala, predicting the likelihood of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.

At the same time, the Southwest Monsoon has fully retreated from the Indian subcontinent. However, there is currently a low-pressure system in the Southeast Arabian Sea, with a cyclonic circulation located in the Bay of Bengal. The IMD anticipates that this low-pressure area will intensify within the next 24 hours, evolving into a severe depression over the Southwest Arabian Sea and Central West Arabian Sea by October 21. The warning further indicates the potential for severe weather conditions and wind speeds of up to 70 kmph in the Southeast Arabian Sea until Monday. Additionally, a fishing advisory has been issued, urging caution and advising against fishing activities in the South Bay of Bengal until the 23rd.

For today, schools are closed in the capital, where relief camps are currently operational. The district is under a yellow alert due to the expectation of heavy rainfall, particularly in hilly areas. Moreover, fishing activities have been prohibited along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep, given the prevailing weather conditions.
