NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif returned home today, October 21. After spending four years in self-imposed exile in the UK, Sharif returned on a special flight from Dubai.

According to sources Sharif, along with some family members, and other party members around 150 people landed in Islamabad from Dubai to Islamabad on the chartered flight “Umeed-e-Pakistan.” After a brief stay in the Islamabad airport lounge to sign and file appeals against the convictions he was in jail for before he left the country, Sharif is to fly to Lahore.

He had previously gone abroad after being sentenced to 7 years in prison in a corruption case in Lahore.

In 2019, Sharif had received permission from the High Court to travel abroad for medical treatment, but he did not return until now.

Sharif is scheduled to address a rally organized by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Lahore this evening. It is also reported that he reached Dubai two days ago, following discussions with various organizational leaders there.

Yesterday, an Islamabad court granted him protective bail until October 24, meaning he cannot be arrested before appearing in court. Sharif first arrived in the capital, Islamabad, and is expected to travel to Lahore. His younger brother and former Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has called on his supporters to welcome Nawaz Sharif’s return.

A caretaker government is currently in power and it will hold the vote in January.
