NCERT suggests to replace ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in school textbooks

New Delhi: A high-level committee formed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to update the school curriculum has proposed that the term ‘India’ should be replaced with ‘Bharat’ in school textbooks across all classes. C.I. Isaac, one of the NCERT panel members, stated that if the recommendation is approved by the Union Education Ministry, it may be implemented from the next academic year.

Isaac explained that the term ‘India’ became commonly used after the East India Company and the Battle of Plassey in 1757. In contrast, the word ‘Bharat’ is mentioned in ancient texts like the 7,000-year-old Vishnu Purana. In light of this, the committee has unanimously recommended the use of the name ‘Bharat’ in textbooks for all classes. The introduction of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the curriculum of all subjects is also part of this new change.

The committee has also recommended the inclusion of a ‘Classical History’ section in textbooks instead of ‘Ancient History.’ History will not be divided into ancient, medieval, and modern. The British introduced the division of Indian history into ancient, medieval, and modern. The committee has recommended that textbooks should cover the conquests and empires of Hindu rulers.
