New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a round of re-questioning for Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi concerning the ongoing National Herald case investigation. This move by the ED aims to gather additional information and evidence before formally submitting the charge sheet to the court. A new summons may be issued to both leaders as part of this renewed inquiry.

Pawan Kumar Bansal, the former Congress treasurer, has been under ED’s interrogation in connection with the case over the past two days. The ED’s interrogation of Bansal is based on documents and evidence acquired during various raids, including those conducted at the National Herald office in Delhi.

In 2022, the ED had previously interrogated Sonia, Rahul, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawan Bansal, and others on multiple occasions. Sonia’s questioning extended over three days, while Rahul was questioned for five days.

In 2012, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and advocate Subramanian Swamy filed a complaint in a trial court, accusing certain Congress leaders of being involved in cheating and breach of trust in the acquisition of Associated Journals Ltd. by Young Indian Ltd. (YIL). Swamy contended that YIL had acquired the assets of the National Herald in a malicious manner. The case names Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandes, journalist Suman Dubey, and technocrat Sam Pitroda among the accused.

The central allegation is that the Congress-owned Associated Journals Limited, with assets valued at Rs 90.25 crore, was transferred to Young India, owned by Rahul and Sonia, for a mere Rs 50 lakh.
