Alappuzha: The CPI (M) has taken disciplinary action against its local secretary in Cheriyanadu following alleged connections with the SDPI. Sheed Muhammad, the local secretary, has been placed on compulsory leave after links surfaced between him and the leader of the SDPI. The party’s decision was prompted by concerns over Sheed’s association with an SDPI leader and allegations of involvement in the SDPI leader’s hotel venture.
Criticism within the party escalated due to Sheed’s perceived improper ties, with accusations suggesting his participation in the SDPI leader’s business endeavors. Despite the allegations, Sheed explained to the party that he had no substantive connection with the SDPI leader.
The lack of immediate action against Sheed led to a significant intra-party conflict, resulting in 38 members resigning from the Cheriyanadu local committee and the party. They protested the delay in addressing the issue and demanded prompt action.
In response to the internal turmoil, KS Gopinathan has been appointed to take charge of the local committee in place of Sheed Muhammad. The inauguration of the hotel venture, in which the SDPI leader holds a share, was officiated by Chengannur MLA and Minister Saji Cheriyan. Sheed, who had invited the minister, claimed the venture as his own institution during the inauguration. However, SDPI leaders also attended the event, adding complexity to the situation.
