THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K Surendran, the BJP Kerala state president, has vehemently criticized the Kerala state government in the wake of the tragic suicide of farmer KG Prasad in Thakazhi, Alappuzha district.
Surendran directly accused the Kerala state government of being solely responsible for farmer Prasad’s suicide, pointing to several pieces of evidence indicating the government’s neglect of farmers. He demanded that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan provide answers regarding the farmer’s suicide, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
According to Surendran, the life of farmer Prasad could have been saved if the state government had promptly disbursed the funds provided by the central government, at least. He further accused the state government of mismanagement and irregularities in fund management, alleging that the funds intended by the central government for farmers were being diverted by the Pinarayi government and not disbursed on time. Surendran attributed the farmer’s suicide to the state government’s extravagant spending in non-prioritized areas.
Due to the delayed disbursement of funds, farmers were forced to take loans for cultivation, pushing them into debt traps, according to Surendran. He highlighted the fact that farmer Prasad did not get timely treatment at the Government Medical College hospital in Alappuzha, stating that proper medical attention could have saved the farmer’s life. Surendran asserted that the state government bears sole responsibility for the farmer’s suicide.
Then, the BJP leader listed out the Pinarayi government’s extravagant non-priority expenditure areas instead of disbursing money for procured paddy to the farmers. He cited expenditures on extravagant events like Keraleeyam celebrations, helicopter rentals, frequent foreign trips by the chief minister and his team, while claiming a financial crisis in disbursing money for procured paddy to the farmers.
