Kolkata: Junior doctors who were on strike for a week have called of their strike after West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, agreed to their demands. The doctors announced their decision after a meeting with Mamata in which the Chief Minister agreed to set up a Grievance Redressal Cell in all the state run hospitals.
The doctors went on strike after the relatives of a deceased patient beat up two junior doctors at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The strike had paralysed the medical sector in the state. When the impasse continued, doctors across the country came out in support for their agitating colleagues in West Bengal.
The Indian Medical Association and AIIMS extended their solidarity with the doctors on strike.
Yesterday, the doctors who were on strike had agreed to meet with the Chief Minister but on the condition that the meeting must be covered by the media and not held behind closed doors.
Mamata Banerjee relented today and agreed to meet the doctors under the watch of the media and agreed to their demands. She directed the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Anuj Sharma, to deploy a nodal police officer in every hospital.
Doctors from 14 medical colleges from across the state and 28 medical student representatives were present for the meeting.
