Thiruvananthapuram: Education Minister V Sivankutty has rejected the statements of the Director of General Education who had criticized the excessive distribution of marks in 10th and Plus Two exams. The Minister stated that it is not the government’s stand that is being said in the internal meetings. He said that examinations are being conducted in a better manner in Kerala.

It is not the government policy to automatically improve quality by making the children fail in the exams. It is not the government’s position to comment critically on how to approach education in workshops. Teachers have their opinions. A lot of debate and discussions happens about what is right and what is wrong. The Minister told the media that all such ongoing discussions should not be seen as government policy.

Director of General Education S Shanavas had said that there are even students who lack basic reading skills and telling them, they have talents that they don’t possess, is cheating.

Director of General Education said that allowing students to pass in public examinations is acceptable; there’s no objection to that. However, he insisted on not giving more that 50% marks to students who don’t deserve high scores.

“Is getting an A or an A+ trivial? What if 69,000 people get A+ every time?” he asked. Shanavas had said this during the SSLC question paper preparation workshop.

The Director of General Education’s remarks came as a blow to the government and the department minister who have been constantly praising the high pass percentage in the state.
