Thiruvananthapuram: Dowry-related deaths and instances of domestic violence remain a matter of shame for Kerala. Despite a notable decrease in dowry-linked deaths in the state, instances of dowry harassment persist without decline. The statistics provided by the National Crime Records Bureau paint a deeply concerning picture for Kerala. The recent suicide of Dr. Shahana due to dowry issues has once again brought the distressing topic of dowry-related deaths to the forefront in the state.
Reportedly, there have been 192 cases of dowry-related deaths in Kerala in the past 12 years, with the highest number recorded in 2012 when 32 people lost their lives. These figures are according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Southern Kerala, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram, has reported the highest number of such tragic incidents.
Fewer instances of dowry marriages were reported in 2020. Up until now this year, Kerala has recorded 11 deaths related to this issue, three of which occurred in the rural area of Thiruvananthapuram.
