NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow on Saturday over the passing of Kuwait’s ruling Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
“Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. We convey our deepest condolences to the Royal family, the leadership, and the people of Kuwait,” said the PM on X.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has declared a nationwide day of mourning to be held today (Sunday). As part of this tribute, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the country. The government has refrained from organizing any celebratory events.
Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, with over half a century of experience in various administrative roles, passed away at the age of 86 while serving as the 16th Emir of Kuwait during ongoing treatment for health issues.
Beginning his official career at 25 as the governor of Hawally, he later served as the Home Minister in 1962 and 1978, followed by his role as Defense Minister. In October 1994, Sheikh Nawaf assumed the position of Deputy Chief of the Kuwait National Guard, which he held until 2003. He also served as Prime Minister for three years. In 2020, following the demise of the former Emir, he assumed leadership as the Emir of Kuwait.
