IDUKKI: In the Vandiperiyar murder case of a 6-year-old girl, the victim’s family is also join party in the appeal filed by the government. The government has decided to file a private plea demanding the quashing of the verdict that acquitted the accused, Arjun Sundar (24), in the case.
On December 15, the court acquitted Arjun Sundar, citing the police’s failure in the investigation and the submission of evidence to the Court. The family members of the victim will appeal to the Director General of Prosecution.
It is reported that, after analyzing eyewitness testimonies, the judgment transcript, and other evidence, an appeal will be filed in the High Court in the coming days. The family will demand the quashing of the judgment that acquitted the accused and the inclusion of charges under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the accused, which the police had not initially charged.
The incident in the case took place on June 30, 2021, when a six-year-old girl was found hanging dead in her residence at Churakkulam Estate, Vandiperiyar, Idukki district. The post-mortem examination report revealed that the child was sexually assaulted and murdered.
Following the investigations, cross-examinations, and evidence collection, the victim’s neighbor, Arjun Sundar, was arrested in connection with the case. Initially, he had confessed to the crime.
