ERNAKULAM: Adimali native Mariyakutty has filed a petition against the Kerala state government regarding the not disbursing of social welfare pension in the Kerala High Court (HC). Today, the HC will consider this petition challenging the suspension of the pension.

Previously, the HC criticized the Kerala government on this issue. In response, the government justified its actions, citing a severe financial crisis as the reason for not disbursing Rs 1600 for the social welfare pension.

The court emphasized that the government must ensure the protection of every citizen’s rights. Furthermore, the court warned that failure to pay the pension would result in the government bearing the petitioner’s costs for three months.

Subsequently, the government accused Mariyakutty’s petition of being politically motivated. Meanwhile, allegations were spread by the CPI(M) that she owned two acres of land and two houses, propagated through their mouthpiece, Deshabhimani newspaper. In response to this defamation, Mariyakutty took legal action.

Justice Devan Ramachandran stated firmly that the Court would not tolerate any insult directed at the petitioner by the government. The court highlighted the shocking nature of the state government’s attack on the petitioner’s credibility.

In light of these events, the government changed its stance regarding Mariyakutty.

On November 8, 2023, Mariyakutty and Annakutty staged a protest against the Kerala state government for its failure to disburse the social welfare pension. During the protest they hold a begging pot, claiming that the Kerala government had forced them into a situation of begging. The news become wide spread and then government said it as politically motivated.
