ERNAKULAM: Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers in Kerala staged a ‘Mariyakutty Model’ protest by holding begging pots in Muvattupuzha, Ernakulam district. Citing the Kerala state government’s failure to disburse incentives and honorarium, these workers resorted to begging on the streets, expressing that they are on the verge of suicide due to the lack of income.

The protest took place in front of Muvattupuzha Taluk Hospital and premises. The protestors emphasized their complete dependence on government funds as their sole livelihood. They demanded prompt payment from the Kerala government for the work they have performed. Holding placards and begging buckets, they sought donations from passers-by and vehicle passengers.

Over a hundred ASHA workers participated in this odd form of protest. They urged the state government to immediately intervene and resolve the issue.

On November 8, 2023, Mariyakutty and Annakutty staged a protest against the Kerala state government for its failure to disburse the social welfare pension. During the protest they held a begging pot, claiming that the Kerala government had forced them into a situation of begging. The news became wide spread.
