Pathanamthitta: A recent crackdown on shops attempting to extort Ayyappa devotees has resulted in fines exceeding Rs. 9 lakh, according to figures released from November 17 to January 11. The investigation was carried out by a dedicated squad appointed by the Additional District Magistrate.
The fines were levied for various violations, including selling stale food, overcharging, and penalties for those overcharging the users of public toilets. The maximum amount of fines was recorded during the period from January 3 to 11, with a total of Rs. 2,37,000 collected during this time alone.
The ongoing investigations are being overseen by six duty magistrates, with Sannidhanam having two 24-hour squads under the supervision of the duty magistrate and executive magistrate. Each squad comprises 14 employees from various departments, such as revenue, legal metrology, health, and civil supplies.
