Will Congress-JD(S) coalition government fall in Karnataka?

Bengaluru: The political situation in Karnataka is turning volatile as reports are coming in of 11 coalition government MLAs resigning from the Legislative Assembly.

According to reports, 3 MLAs from JD(S) and 8 from Congress reached the office of the Speaker of the house to offer their resignation. However, the Speaker refused to meet them saying that they need appointment for meeting with him.

The Speaker later said he will see the resignations on Monday and said that his office will accept the resignation letters of the MLAs. If the resignations are accepted the number of the coalition government in the Assembly will fall to 105. The BJP also has the same number of MLA in the Assembly. The coalition government’s MLAs must go below 103 for the government to fall. This is because two MLAs had resigned earlier and so the total amount of the house is now 222.

Congress leaders D. K. Shivakumar and K. C. Venugopal are trying their best to prevent a fall of the UPA bastion in Karnataka. However, their efforts are not seeing results this time.

Interestingly, the coup began when the JD(S) leader and Chief Minister of Karnataka, H. D. Kumaraswamy is in the United States. He will return only on Monday. Earlier, when two MLAs leader Anand Singh and Ramesh Jarkiholi resigned from the Assembly, the Chief Minister had said that he is watching the situation from the US and added that the BJP’s dreams would not come true.

Though the Congress and JD(S) came together to prevent another BJP government in Karnataka, the infighting in the coalition was out in the open. The coalition which was formed out of convenience was doomed to fall from the beginning itself.
