Ernakulam: The custody period of Savad, the prime accused in the case of Prof. TJ Joseph’s hand-chopping incident, will end today.

Savad, a religious extremist and activist of the banned terrorist group Popular Front of India (PFI), was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on January 10, 2024, from Mattannur, Kannur. Today, Savad will be produced in NIA’s Kochi court.

A new charge sheet, including Savad, will also be submitted to the court. The charge sheet incorporates several pieces of evidence gathered from the accused.

According to the records of the investigation team, Prof. TJ Joseph, the former Head of the Malayalam Department at Newman College in Thodupuzha, was assaulted for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad in an internal examination question paper that he had set for the B. Com Second Semester examination at Newman College, Thodupuzha. On July 4, 2010, while the professor and his family were on their way to church on a Sunday, PFI terrorists severed his right hand and stabbed him in the left leg in front of his family. This incident sparked extensive discussions regarding Muslim terrorism in Kerala.

The prime accused Savad was arrested 13 years after the crime from Mattannur, a village in Kerala. Savad was living there in disguise, under the false name ‘Shajahan,’ in a rented house with his wife, Khadija, and two children with the help of SDPI.
