Idukki: The court sentenced the three accused in the case of the gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl from West Bengal in Poopara to 90 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 40,000. Sugandh and Sivakumar, natives of Tamil Nadu, and Shyam, a native of Poopara, were convicted by the Devikulam fast-track court.

It was proven in court yesterday (Monday) that the accused had committed offenses under the sections of the POCSO Act. The court sentenced the accused after evaluating the scientific evidence and circumstances. Meanwhile, one of the accused in the case was acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

The incident in question took place in 2022. A 16-year-old native of Bengal, who had come to the tea plantation with her friend, was gang-raped, and her friend was beaten up by the accused. Two others involved in the case are minors. The Thodupuzha Juvenile Justice Board will consider their case.
