Wayanad: In response to a wild tusker, with a radio collar attached to its neck, entering the residential area of Manathavady, Wayanad, prohibitory orders have been imposed in Mananthavadi. Authorities have advised local residents to exercise caution, leading the district administration to enforce Section 144 in Mananthavady municipality and Edavaka panchayat.

Forest department officials and police swiftly addressed the situation as the elephant proceeded towards the Mananthavadi court premises. Believed to have come from Nagarhole National Park, Karnataka the tusker was last sighted in Kaniyaram and Payodu localities, around 3 kilometers from Mananthavady town.

The forest department, along with police officers, is on the scene, and efforts are underway to ensure the safety of residents. The wild tusker, which has garnered attention on social media, is reported to have been non-violent thus far.

The wild elephant’s journey took it through various areas, including Newman College, NGO quarters, Mini Civil Station, Court, Sub Treasury, and the Forest Department’s rest house, and the elephant swam across a river and reached a market area in Mananthavady.

Despite being non-violent, precautions are being taken, and attempts to deter the tusker involve bursting crackers. In light of the situation, the Tahsildar has urged parents in the Mananthavady region to keep their children at home until further notice. School authorities have been directed to ensure the safety of students who have already arrived at schools today. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to guide the wild elephant away from populated areas persist.
