Thiruvananthapuram: Malayalam lyricist BK Hari Narayanan extended support to Sreekumaran Thampi, who criticized the Kerala Sahitya Academi for insulting his song. Hari Narayanan said that Sreekumaran Thampi was a great lyricist, and he admired him a lot. Hari Narayanan also mentioned that Sreekumaran Thampi’s style of writing was always superior to his own.
Hari Narayanan responded to the media, after which Kerala Sahitya Academi President K Satchidanandan said that BK Hari Narayanan’s ‘Kerala song’ had been selected by the Academi. Hari Narayanan added that he stood with Sreekumaran Thampi for the mental distress he faced in connection with the ‘Kerala song.’ Hari Narayanan mentioned that he made some modifications based on the suggestions of Academy President Satchidanandan. However, he then stated that he had not yet received any official information from the Kerala Sahitya Academy.
The controversy surrounding Sreekumaran Thampi’s Kerala song escalated after he criticized the Kerala Sahitya Academi on Facebook. It all began when Sreekumaran Thampi revealed feeling insulted by Kerala Sahitya Academi Secretary CP Aboobacker and President K Satchidanandan, who had requested him to write a song about ‘Kerala’ for the state government. Despite sending the lyrics, Sreekumaran Thampi had not received any official communication regarding its acceptance or rejection.
A week later, Sreekumaran Thampi noticed an advertisement on TV channels from the Sahitya Academi inviting submissions of songs on ‘Kerala.’ Thereby, he inferred that his song had been rejected without any formal information, leaving him feeling insulted.
