Wayanad: Authorities have imposed Section 144 in four wards of the Mananthavady municipality, which includes Kurukanmoola, Payyampally, Kurua, and Kadamkolli areas as a radio-collared wild elephant had ventured into the surrounding areas of Mananthavady and killed a local tractor driver. Ajeesh Kumar (46), a resident of Padamala, fell victim to the attack.  Local residents in Mananthavady staged a protest against the forest department by blocking the Medical College road.

The wild elephant was initially sighted in the Koyileri , Thannikkal area in Wayanad during the early hours of this morning. Subsequently, it broke the wall of a nearby house and attacked Ajeesh Kumar. Despite Ajeesh being taken to Mananthavady Medical College Hospital, his life could not be saved.

According to statements from the forest department, the elephant was a ‘Mozayana’ (tuskless male elephant) previously captured by the Karnataka forest department. Following its capture, the elephant was released into the forest with a radio collar attached for monitoring purposes. Officials including the Mananthavady Range Officer have assured the public that measures are being implemented to track the elephant’s movements and facilitate its return to forest.
