Wayanad: Minister for Forests and Wild Life Protection AK Saseendran clarified that the decision to drug the elephant, named Belur Makana, that killed a man in Mananthavady will be made after it is captured and brought to the Muthanga elephant camp for observation and the preparations are underway.
“The elephant will be captured using darting techniques and then relocated to the Muthanga elephant camp for monitoring,” stated Minister Saseendran. He added that the elephant’s health condition will be closely monitored, and a decision regarding its future—whether to relocate it into the forest or train it as a ‘Kumki’ elephant—will be made based on its health conditions.
Referring to the incident in Tanneer Komban, Minister Saseendran emphasised the importance of learning from previous experiences. He said to the public that measures are being taken based on the lessons learned from previous incidents of Thanner Komban.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to track the elephant’s movements. Forest department officials have reported that the elephant has moved from Padamala to the Kattikkulam ,Cheloor area. The wild elephant’s route is being monitored with the assistance of a radio collar.
Yesterday, authorities focused on addressing public concerns when they staged a blockade protest triggered by the incident where the wild elephant killed Ajeesh in Mananthavady. This delayed in implementing other measures related to the wild elephant Belur Makana. However, steps are being taken to ensure the safety of both the public and the elephant in question.
