Wayanad: The mission to capture Belur Makhna, the wild elephant that ventured into Mananthvady and killed a man, has entered its third day today in Wayanad. Authorities have commenced preparations to tranquillize the wild elephant in the Mannundi area as the team reaches close to the wild elephant based on signals from its radio collar. The operation was resumed today around 8:30 a.m. after initial attempts to tranquillize the elephant were unsuccessful yesterday.
Despite heavy protests from locals, authorities have affirmed their intention to capture the elephant today. The Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the Thirunelli Panchayat and four divisions of Manathavady municipal council, which include Kurukkanmoola (12), Kuruva (13), Kadamkoli, and Payyampally (15), as the mission continues.
Meanwhile, the Farmers Relief Forum (FRF), a farmers’ organisation in Wayanad, has called for a ‘Hartal’ today from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., but assures that shops will not be forcibly closed, nor will any protest be undertaken.
