Thiruvananthapuram: The price of subsidised goods distributed through Supplyco in the state have been increased as the subsidies for 13 items were reduced from 55 percent to 35 percent.

Kerala Food Minister GR Anil stated in the Legislative Assembly that Supplyco is facing a huge financial crisis. Consequently, the subsidy for 13 essential items has been reduced from 55 percent to 35 percent.

The 13 items affected by the subsidy reduction include staples such as Jaya rice, Kuruva rice, Matta rice, raw rice (pachari), sugar, coconut oil, red chilli, coriander, green gram, black gram (uzhunnu), chickpea, red cow peas (vanpayar), and toor dal (thuvarapparippu), along with green vegetables.

Minister GR Anil disclosed that the government owes Supplyco a hefty sum of Rs 2466.10 crore, affecting its operations. To ease the crisis, the government allotted Rs 215 crore to Supplyco to purchase subsidised goods and control price hikes.

From 2021 to 2024, a total of Rs 2789.18 crore was spent on purchasing the 13 subsidised items, while only Rs 1694.63 crore was received through its sales. This imbalance has led to a big loss of Rs 1094.55 crore.
