Kasaragod: Marking a significant milestone in the history of the Central University of Kerala’s infrastructure development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Administrative Block (B.R. Ambedkar Bhawan). The inauguration was conducted via video conferencing.

Listing out the current educational infrastructure projects, Prime Minister Modi underscored the significant progress in the education and skill development sectors, noting that a decade ago, such advancements on this scale were unimaginable. “But, this is new India”, the Prime Minister said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to substantial investment in the education of both current and future generations. Shri Modi highlighted that over the past decade, the nation has seen an unprecedented growth in the establishment of schools, colleges, and universities, with the addition of 50 new degree colleges in Jammu and Kashmir alone. He further noted that 45,000 previously unenrolled children have now gained access to education, expressing satisfaction that girl students no longer need to travel long distances for schooling. “There was a time when schools were run, while today schools are enhanced”, PM Modi added.

Noting India’s ascent into the top 5 global economies, the Prime Minister highlighted the enhanced capacity of the government to invest in welfare schemes as a result of the improving economy. He emphasized that the improved economic situation has enabled India to provide free ration, medical treatment, durable houses, gas connections, toilets, and benefits from the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi. “Now we have to make India the third largest economic power in the world in the next 5 years. This will increase manifold the country’s ability to invest in the welfare of the poor and infrastructure development,” the Prime Minister concluded.

Vice Chancellor (i/c) Prof. K.C. Baiju presided over the event held at a special venue on the university campus. Addressing the gathering, he said that the inauguration of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhawan marks a significant milestone in the developmental journey of the Central University of Kerala. It is a pleasure to be able to name the administrative building of the University after the architect of India’s Constitution, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The aim of the university is the all-round development of students and society. The university is also committed to contributing towards the development of the district, he pointed out.

MP Rajmohan Unnithan who delivered the keynote address on the occasion, said that without fraternity, the country cannot survive. He quoted Ambedkar, stating that fraternity is synonymous with democracy itself. Nelson Mandela and Gandhiji, who upheld love and compassion, should be role models for the new generation, he added.

Prof. G. Gopakumar, former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Koyippally Member, Executive Council and others addressed the gathering. C.H. Kunhambu, MLA, Udma, Prof. R.K. Mishra, Member, Academic Council, members of the Court and Executive Council, political, social and cultural dignitaries, academicians, teachers, staff and students attended the event. Dr. M. Muralidharan Nambiar, Registrar, welcomed the gathering and Dr. R. Jayaprakash, Controller of Examinations, proposed the vote of thanks. Contractors and consultants were honoured on the occasion. Students representing various states of India received the guests in traditional costumes. Cultural programmes by students were also staged.

Constructed at a cost of 38.16 crores, the B.R. Ambedkar Bhawan stands as a remarkable architectural feat, funded under the HEFA (Higher Education Financing Agency) scheme of the Union Ministry of Education. The architectural design, meticulously crafted to harmonize with the natural topography, underscores the university’s vision for sustainable development and future growth. The B.R. Ambedkar Bhawan heralds a new era of administrative efficiency for the Central University of Kerala. Scheduled for relocation from the Gangotri Block, the new administrative headquarters will house various departments, offering a modern workspace equipped with State-of-the-art amenities.
