Radio icon Ameen Sayani passes away at 91: Remembering his legacy

Mumbai: Renowned radio host Ameen Sayani, beloved for his legendary voice among radio enthusiasts, has passed away.

Ameen Sayani, known for his iconic voice on radio, passed away at the age of 91. He died of a heart attack. The news of his death was confirmed by his son, Rajil Sayani. Rajil Sayani said that his father Ameen Sayani suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night and was taken to a hospital in south Mumbai where his condition deteriorated. Despite efforts from doctors to revive him, he passed away in the evening. His last rites will be held tomorrow.

Ameen Sayani was a radio announcer who won the hearts of listeners as the host of Geetmala on Akashvani. He was born in Mumbai on December 21, 1932. His distinctive presentation style made him iconic in the radio world among listeners. With his melodious voice and captivating presentation skills, Akashvani was able to attract more listeners.

Ameen Sayani started his broadcasting career in English and later switched to Hindi broadcasting after the country’s independence. He was popularized by Akashvani’s Geetmala program, which played an important role in creating radio listeners in the country.

Geetmala received national significance by broadcasting the best of Hindi songs to the masses, allowing Akashvani to create target listeners for decades. Ameen Sayani’s method of introducing the Geetmala program as ‘bahano’ or ‘baiyo’ (sisters and brothers) later became a big landmark. He has been in radio broadcasting for nearly sixty years and has hosted and produced over 54,000 radio programs.

Ameen Sayani has also worked on over 19,000 voiceovers and jingles for various commercials. Ameen Sayani also appeared in many films as a radio host.
