New Delhi: Legendary Ghazal singer, Pankaj Udhas, breathed his last at the age of 72 on Monday after battling a prolonged illness. His family confirmed the news of his demise.

Pankaj Udhas was an iconic figure in Indian music, particularly renowned for his mastery in Ghazals. He played an instrumental role in popularizing the unique art of blending Urdu poetry with soulful melodies, alongside stalwarts like Jagjit Singh and Talat Aziz, making it accessible to audiences across the nation.

Born on April 17, 1951, in Savarkundla, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas hailed from a family with a musical background, with his elder brother Manhar Udhas also finding success in Bollywood playback singing. After relocating to Mumbai and graduating from St. Xavier’s College, Pankaj Udhas made his mark in the industry with his song “Chitthi Aayee Hai” from the film Naam (1986). Following this, he released numerous albums, toured globally as a renowned Ghazal singer, composed music for various films, and lent his voice as a playback singer. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government in 2006.
