Over 1.4 lakh electricity metres are non-functional in Kerala, says KSEB

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has revealed that a total of 1,42,072 electricity metres are non-functional across the state, with over 22,000 of them inactive for more than a year.

KSEB disclosed that out of the total 1.35 crore metres installed in households and institutions, a significant portion remains damaged, with 21,635 belonging to various institutions. KSEB provided this data in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query. According to KSEB, the main impediment to replacing these malfunctioning metres is the unavailability of new metres.

The progress of the central government’s smart metre project faced disruption due to a lack of leadership from the Kerala government. Despite the allocation of 1.50 lakh smart metres by the Central government as per the plan given by Kerala, the project encountered setbacks as the Kerala government deviated from the plan.
