Ernakulam: Lyme disease, caused by the Borrelia bacteria, has been reported in Koovapady, Ernakulam district of Kerala, as confirmed by a doctor from a local private hospital. Jilse George, senior physician at Lisie Hospital, disclosed that a 56-year-old man has been diagnosed with the illness. The diagnosis was confirmed when the patient’s sample tested positive at the Bengaluru unit of the National Institute of Virology.
Lyme disease is transmitted by insects and poses a severe threat to the nervous system, potentially leading to death. However, if detected early, the disease is curable.
The patient sought medical attention on December 6 last year, presenting symptoms of high fever and knee swelling. Upon the display of epileptic symptoms, the patient’s spinal fluid was examined. The tests confirmed meningitis, with further analysis revealing Lyme disease. This marks the first confirmed case of Lyme disease in the state in the past ten years.
