Thiruvananthapuram: More cranes from China will soon arrive at the Vizhinjam International Port, as part of the development of the Vizhinjam International Container Transshipment Terminal.

According to the reports, in the second phase, 17 more cranes in three ships will reach the Vizhinjam coast on 4th, 17th and 23rd of April. In the first phase, 15 cranes had reached the port and the trial run of these cranes has also begun.

The first ship that will reach the port on April 4 will have six cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes whereas the second ship that will reach on April 17 will have two ship-to-shore cranes and four cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes. The third ship that is set to arrive at the Vizhinjam coast will have two ship-to-shore cranes and three cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes.

It is expected that the first phase of the Vizhinjam International Container Transshipment Terminal will be completed by Dec 2024. It is reported that in the first phase, the port is expected to handle one lakh containers. This capacity will be increased corresponding to the completion of the projects in the subsequent phases.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram is India’s first deep-water mega container transshipment port, which is under construction. It is a multi-purpose, all-weather; green port located 16 km away from the  Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. It is also the first automated port in India and the sole port in the country to be located adjacent to an international shipping route. The seaport will be connected by India’s third-longest railway tunnel, presently under planning phase.
