Srinagar, Jul 2 (UNI): A soldier was martyred in an encounter with militants in the south Kashmir district of Pulwama, official sources said on Friday.
Acting on a specific information about the presence of militants in village Hanjin Rajpora in Pulwama, the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) late Thursday night.
A soldier of 44 RR was injured during the encounter and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, sources said.
Three to four militants are believed to be trapped in the area, they added. According to the sources, residents were moved to safer places.
“After receiving the police information about the presence of militants, the operation was launched,” they informed.
After sealing all exit points, when the security forces were moving towards the targeted area, militants fired on the forces, who retaliated leading to an encounter.
The operation was on when the last reports came in. Meanwhile, the internet has been suspended in Pulwama as a precautionary measure.
Additional security forces were deployed in the nearby area to prevent any law and order situation.
As many as 61 militants, including some top commanders, were killed by security forces in different encounters in the valley during the first six months of 2021.
