New Delhi: In response to recent Houthi rebel attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, Bharat has deployed warships in the Arabian Sea. The guided missile destroyers, namely INS Mormugao, INS Kochi, and INS Kolkata, are positioned to safeguard cargo ships in case of any adverse situations.

The deployment strategy involves INS Kolkata, positioned for swift entry into the Red Sea, closely followed by INS Kochi. Apart from this, INS Visakhapatnam and INS Chennai are deployed in the middle of the Arabian Sea. According to national media reports, each of these warships was to be equipped with anti-ship versions of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and other sophisticated weaponry. The Indian Navy’s tanker, INS Deepak, has also been brought close to them.

On December 23, the crude oil vessel MV Chem Pluto was attacked by drones. The attack occurred at a distance of 201 nautical miles from the Indian port of Dwarka. Following this, MV Sai Baba, carrying the Gabon flag, was also attacked in the Red Sea. Investigations by the United States confirmed that Houthi Shia rebels’ were behind the attacks.

Following the attack, the damaged vessel was brought to Mumbai yesterday afternoon. An investigation team from the Department of Defence reached the ship to conduct inspections. The vessel had 21 Indian nationals and one Vietnamese national on board during the attack.
