Thiruvananthapuram:  The anticipation is building as the prestigious Kerala State Film Awards gear up to honour the finest talents in the Malayalam film industry. As the final jury, headed by acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Gautam Ghosh, commences the evaluation process, the competition for the best actor and best actress categories is heating up.

According to reports, Culture Minister Saji Cherian is now set to announce the winners today at 3 p.m., with the entire film fraternity eagerly waiting to celebrate the deserving talents in the Malayalam film industry.

In a surprising turn of events, three iconic actors, Mammootty, Fahad Fasil, and Kunchako Boban, have emerged as strong contenders in the best actor category. Mammootty, known for his exceptional performances, stands out with his exceptional portrayals in “Nanpakal Nerath Mayakkam,” “Puzhu,” and “Rorschach.” His mesmerising performance in “Nanpakal Nerath Mayakkam” has even garnered international recognition at various film festivals.

Kunchako Boban, the heartthrob of Malayalam cinema, has delivered memorable performances in “Ariyippu,” “Nna Than Case Kodu,” and “Pada,” which have earned him a spot in the coveted final round.

The real surprise, however, comes in the form of Fahad Fasil, whose outstanding portrayal in the 2022 release “Malayankunju” has earned him a place in the best actor category.

In the best actress category, Vincy Sony Aloshious and Zarin Shihab are set for a head-to-head battle for the coveted award. Vincy’s spectacular solo performance in “Rekha” has left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike. Meanwhile, Zarin Shihab’s powerful portrayal in “Attam” has also earned her a well-deserved spot in the final round.

Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s “Vazhakku” is a frontrunner in the race for Best Director, with expectations of clinching at least three coveted awards this year.

Several notable films are being considered for various categories, including Lijo Jose Pellissery’s “Nanpakal Nerath Mayakkam,” Tarun Murthy’s “Saudi Vellakka,” Mahesh Narayanan’s “Ariyippu,” Shahi Kabir’s “Ela Veezha Poonchira,” and Vipin Das’s “Jaya Jaya Jaya Jay Hai,” among others.

The final jury, comprising esteemed personalities such as actress Gauthami, cinematographer Hari Nair, sound designer D. Yuvraj, and playback singer Jency Gregory, is determined to recognise and celebrate excellence in Malayalam cinema.

The much-anticipated award announcement was postponed to today following the demise of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
