N.S Rajappan, has earned recognition for his commitment towards cleaning lake Vembanad in Kerala. Rajappan was afflicted with polio at the age of five and even though he is paralysed below his knees, it didn’t stop him from his commitment towards cleaning the lake. He has been going by boat into the Vembanad lake and taking out all the plastic bottles thrown into the lake. He dries this plastic waste before selling it to a local agency for Rs. 12 per kilogram.

In this month’s edition of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said, we should take inspiration from this elderly person and contribute to cleanliness.

“I was pleased to hear that Prime Minister Modi mentioned my name in Mann ki Baat address. I listened to the radio programme at my neighbour’s place,” said Rajappan

The story of Rajappan came into light after a youtuber made a small video of his life and posted it. The video became viral and people in the country praised Rajappan for his efforts and dedication.
