Voting for the fifth phase of the eight-phase assembly election in West Bengal began on Saturday morning in 45 of the state’s 294 constituencies amid elaborate security arrangements.

Polling for the fifth phase is being held across six districts and 45 assembly seats. The districts include North Pargana Part I, Darjeeling, Nadia Part I, Kalimpong, East Bardhaman Part I and Jalpaiguri.

Barring reports of stray violence, the fifth phase of polling in West Bengal recorded a high turnout of more than 52% till 1:30 pm.

The security personnel are maintaining a tight vigil and they have addressed a few incidents that were reported, an election official said.

“Urging all those voting in today’s fifth phase of the West Bengal elections to vote in large numbers. First time voters in particular should exercise their franchise,” tweeted PM Modi.
