New Delhi: The top court has made a crucial statement today. SC said that if Hindus are minority in Kerala , then they can claim for minority status. Justice U U Lalit also observed that the minority status should be decided by the states.
Supreme Court’s statement is crucial amid the arguments on minority status of Hindus in Kerala. Under Articles 29 and 30, minorities get special protection to run own educational institutions. If Hindus are considered as minorities in states like Kerala and Kashmir, they can claim for constitutional protection, said the top court.
The Supreme Court said this while considering the plea filed by Devaki Nandan Takur, a native of U P, asking for minority status for Hindus in various states.
Hindus are minorities in states of Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Punjab, and also in Union Territories like Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh and Lakshadweep. But, the Hindus living in these states do not get any consideration that the minorities supposed to achieve .This being the reason for the plea.
As per the census of 2011, Hindu population in Kerala is 54.73%. Religious minorities including Muslim and Christian make 45 %. Several reports indicate that Hindu population in Kerala will come down to 50% in the near future.
