New Delhi: Last day, in a function conducted in Jharkhand, Chief Justice N V Ramana commented that the media are running like ‘Kangaroo courts’ nowadays. The irresponsible nature of the media would pull back democracy. The discussions and debates in the media with specific agendas would interrupt democracy. This has imposed pressure even on experienced judges.
His comments actually raised doubts in common people about the real meaning of the term ‘Kangaroo Courts’.
What is a Kangaroo Court?
The term Kangaroo Court was first introduced in the US during the mid 19th century. It is a system that runs without the affiliation of the state or judiciary and publishes punishments without meeting any of the existing parameters.
A chance for trial is not necessarily available here and it often talks in favour of the accused. Among some groups in foreign nations, the Kangaroo courts still exist.
The attacks of the media against some judges are common and it is worrisome too. The tendency to attack judges personally instead of constructively criticizing orders passed by judges is unacceptable. Such criticisms on social media platforms have also increased, added CJI.
