Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has alleged that the petitions filed by the students questioning the ban on hijab in educational institutions were due to the influence of the religious extremist organization Popular Front. The government has informed the court that the government order is to make uniforms mandatory for all students.
The case was heard by a bench comprising Justices Hemand Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the Government of Karnataka. The government also stated that the Front campaigned to make hijab compulsory and cause problems. On 29 March 2013, the Government of Udupi passed a resolution to make uniforms mandatory in pre-university girls’ colleges. Hijab was not included in this. Then all the students came to the college wearing uniforms. Students who got admission in the college in 2021 followed these rules initially.
